Create self assessment (personal) tax returns (SA100)

If you are a sole trader and looking to create self assessment tax returns, you must create a proprietor relationship before continuing.

  1. From the Clients menu, select Clients list then find and open the required client. If any of the entries are greyed out and you cannot select them, this is a restricted client — the client record has been set to Private and you do not have access. Contact your IRIS Elements administrator if you believe this is a mistake.
  2. From the Personal tax returns widget on the client dashboard, select Start a new tax return (or Start new if there are existing returns).

  3. Select the tax Year from the list. The earliest year supported is 2012.
  4. Choose the required tax return Type:
    • SA100 (default)
    • R40
  5. Your reference defaults to the client ID but can be changed.
  6. Select Create to start the tax return process.
  7. If a previous tax return already exists, then applicable data is rolled forward from the previous record and the Data Input tab populated.

If completing a tax return for a sole trader, the Self employmentsection is automatically added to new tax returns.

  8. Select Add a new section to fill out the tax return. Else, if sections have been automatically added, edit each in turn and adjust as required.

View a detailed list of the SA100 tax return sections.

  9. When complete, submit the tax return.

Optional tasks

You can save and return to the tax return at any time before submission:

  • Add an attachment
  • Create and send a tax questionnaire (to request information from your client)
  • View detailed report to produce a PDF of the data entered so far
  • Download Tax Pack to view or produce a PDF of the full tax return

After submission, you must first cancel the original tax return before amending and resubmitting.
