Building a skills and competency framework

Before you can use Skills and Competencies functionality, you need to build a framework. The IRIS Cascade framework has three tiers:

1. Category
2. Subject
3. Level

Categories can have many subjects because subjects can have many levels; see examples below:

Category	Subject	Level
Information Technology	Microsoft Excel	Basic Intermediate Advanced
Customer Management	Managing Complaints	Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3

When you build your skills and competencies framework, start with the categories.

You can add categories, subjects, and levels in the following ways:

• Individually, and specify their properties at the same time.
• Quickly as a list, and then specify their properties later.
