Check or change the status of tax returns
You can check or change the status of the tax return as it moves through the various stages of the process. The status is visible on the applicable tax widget on the specific client dashboard, or Status tab. Find out how to view tax returns
Some statuses are automatically applied, based on actions that have been taken. The following statuses are available:
No work has started on the return
HMRC have not requested a return to be completed. This could be because the client has historically not been required to complete a return. This status enables you to priorities clients who do need to complete a return.
Indicates that a communication has been sent to the client requesting documents and other information in preparation for the return.
Some information has already been received but further information is still required to finalise the completion of the return.
All information has been received but completion of the return has not started.
Preparation of the tax return is in progress.
The return data entry has been completed but not reviewed. This can be used, for example, to enable a junior member of staff to enter the return data, but a senior member will review before sending to the client.
The completed return has been reviewed.
The return is now ready to send for client approval.
The return has been sent to the client for approval and is awaiting client signature.
The client has approved the tax return and is awaiting submisson to HMRC.
The return has been submitted to HMRC, but an accepted or rejected response has not yet been received from HMRC.
A paper tax return has been sent to HMRC (This is where the return cannot be electronically submitted to HMRC potentially due to an HMRC exclusion)
The tax return has been sent to HMRC and accepted.
The tax return has been sent to HMRC, but HMRC has rejected the return due to an error. Find out how to deal with a tax return rejected by HMRC.
The annual tax return and any other related services provided have been completed.
The return for this client has been closed and may no longer be required.
A tax return is no longer required for this client.
