Prepare for your migration

There are some things you need to do before migrating your data from Taxfiler to IRIS Elements that will help the process run as smoothly as possible.

It’s important to read each point in this page and carry out any of the tasks listed before migrating.

Check you’re eligible for migration

To make sure you’re eligible to migrate, simply log into Taxfiler. A message will appear on your homepage telling you how long you have to migrate your data. You'll also have received an email letting you know it's time to migrate.

If no message appears, don’t worry – we’ll be in touch soon to let you know when to migrate.

Review your Taxfiler client data

You should check over your Taxfiler client data before migration so you can bring through all the records you want to.

Read our topic on reviewing your Taxfiler data for migration for guidance on this process.

Make sure you have your Companies House credentials and other online filing passwords ready

To submit tax returns, VAT returns and accounts in IRIS Elements Tax & Accounts, you'll need to set up online filing passwords or connect to HMRC. For security reasons, these passwords and connections are not pulled into Elements during migration.

Read our guidance on locating online filing passwords to help you locate your details.

Get ready to subscribe to IRIS Elements Tax & Accounts

It's not possible to submit tax returns or file accounts in the free trial version of IRIS Elements Tax & Accounts. To avoid any gaps in your ability to submit or file, we recommend either subscribing to the paid version of Tax & Accounts before, or shortly after, migration. You should do this towards the end of your migration window to avoid any overlaps in billing.

Make sure you’re the Taxfiler primary user

To complete the migration, you must be the Taxfiler Primary User. Check that you are by going to the Users tab in the settings menu in Taxfiler. If you’re the Primary User, it’ll say Yes in the Primary User? column.

Choose a good time to migrate

The migration process requires other users to be logged out of Taxfiler and IRIS Elements. For this reason, if you have multiple Taxfiler or Elements users, you might prefer to migrate out of office hours.

Delete any dummy data from IRIS Elements

Before migrating, you should delete any dummy client records you added while exploring the platform. Leaving these records in Elements can cause the migration to fail.
