Overview of Hierarchy
A dimension could contain a considerable number of members. It is therefore necessary to organise and group members.
A hierarchy is a systematic way or organising the members of a dimension into a logical structure. For example, the Country dimension could contain a hierarchy of its members (County and Town) as follows:
Members are automatically aggregated, typically as the sum of the level below. Using the previously demonstrated hierarchy, we could then analyse unit cost and sales for each country, county and town.
Typically, each member has one parent member and zero or more child members.
The hierarchy is used within IRIS Analytics to select the required data to be analysed and appears in the Data Explorer and the Member Explorer as shown in the following graphics:
