Creating an Electronic Tax Return  

To use Filling By Internet (FBI) you must register on the Government Gateway www.gateway.gov.uk and must also have access to the Internet from at least one computer that can connect to the IRIS software. The user ID and password for access to the Government gateway must be entered under program setup before the XML return can be created.

Filing by Internet (FBI)

• The online filing window for Personal, Trust and Partnership Tax Returns is 4 years. This means that only the current filing year and the preceding 3 years can be submitted online. Once the online filing window has closed; older Returns will have to be sent by post.

Select the Electronic Tax Return option from the Reports menu, it is possible to attach files to the Electronic Tax Return at this point Click OK to continue.

HMRC validation of the Return will be carried out, it is vital that any warnings are viewed and dealt with before the Return is submitted online, otherwise it is likely that the Return will be rejected by HMRC.

The Return printed is the same as an ordinary Tax Return except for an extra statement beneath the declaration to confirm that the file may be submitted via the Internet and a cover sheet providing the IRmark associated with this Electronic Tax Return.

A revision can be made and another Electronic Tax Return created, this will overwrite the earlier Electronic Return created. However, if the earlier Return has already been transmitted to the HMRC and accepted, any revision means that the Return must be produced as an Amended Return otherwise the submission would be rejected as a duplicate with a rejection code of 5015.
