Search Criteria

Use the search criteria screen to help find an address.

There are three rules:

  1. None of the searches are case sensitive therefore DATCHET = datchet = Datchet

  2. Any text entered is assumed to end with the wildcard * so, for example, entering Dor in the town field will locate Dorking, Dorchester and all other towns starting DOR.

  3. If two search criteria are entered the search will be inclusive. For example: select town Ashford and county Kent, for a list of addresses in Ashford, Kent, omitting Ashford in Devon, Hampshire and Surrey.

The search criteria will take wildcards * and ?. Entering *Ford in the town field will locate Guildford, Ashford, and so on as well as plain Ford. The ? wildcard is used to subsititute single letters. So a search for town ???Ford will locate Ashford and Telford but not Oxford or Guildford.

It is also possible to search for ranges. Entering R>T in the town would locate all addresses in towns starting with the letters R, S or T.

Postcode - unlike the town and county options, it does not restrict the range of addresses included in the list. Entering F, for example, would simply position the list at the nearest match to postcode F. If a restriction is required, use the range separator: F>F would limit the list to postcodes starting with the letter F.

County - do not enter a standard abbreviated county name, such as LEICS or HANTS, that is not a derivative of the full county name. In this example LEICS will find no matches because the full county name is LEICEstershire. Entering LEIC would work, as would HAMP for Hampshire.
