Transmit Internet Return

Introduction

Internet returns are submitted to the HMRC directly from IRIS. The computer used to transmit internet returns will require an Internet connection either directly via a modem or through a remote proxy server. The electronic return is created with the print electronic tax return option.

Information on the transmission screen may be sorted into order by clicking on one of the column headings.

The screen shows a summary of the Internet returns awaiting transmission or that have been transmitted. The status indicates what has happened to the XML return:

Column Filters

Use the column filters to filter the number of returns shown on the screen. The columns can be filtered to allow more specific returns to be shown on screen instead of all returns.

The following filters can be applied in the transmit internet return screen:

Transmission

Click Transmit to start the transmission. If using a direct connection the dial-up screen will appear and it may be necessary to click Connect. If the connection is via a proxy server there will be a short pause while the connection is made.

The window will show the progress of the return (the information in the window is of no consequence but may be helpful if a problem arises).

After about thirty seconds the process should be complete resulting in an acceptance or a rejection.

Print the acceptance notice for a permanent record. An email will also be sent to confirm acceptance, providing that a valid email address has been provided for the Gateway. A rejection notice will take a similar format, print the report for details including the error number.

If for any reason it is not possible to connect to the Government Gateway a message will appear stating that:

"The Gateway may not be available or there may be a problem connecting to the Internet. Check your Internet connection, and check that you can log into www.gateway.gov.uk"

Which may be because the Internet connection has failed or because the Gateway itself is unavailable - in these cases the return will be marked with a "Fatal error".

In some cases the Gateway will be available but the HMRC computer systems will not. If this happens the return will be transmitted but no response received. The return will be marked "Pending" and the response can be picked up later (it must be collected within 30 days of transmission).
