Setting up HMRC Internet Filing

Introduction

This is topic explains the a step-by-step process to the registration and activation process. This is all you need to use IRIS for Internet filing, there are no charges - the service is provided as a standard feature of the software.

The Internet Filing Service is easy to use; print an electronic return instead of the normal paper return for the client to sign. Once signed, use the option to Transmit Internet Returns. The return will normally be sent and the Revenue response received within a minute.

To use the service, you must first register on the Revenue web site.

 

Register with HMRC for the Self Assessment service for Individual, Partnership and Trust returns and the Corporation Tax service for Corporation Tax returns.

 

Registration

  1.  Log on to HMRC’s home page https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/index.htm

  2. Select Register (New Uses) from the Do it online panel located on the top left hand side of the page. During the registration process for Self Assessment you will also be given the opportunity to register for Corporation Tax.


  3. Click Register (New Uses) under the Do it online section on the right-hand side of the screen.



    The next screen has the heading What would you like to do?

  4. Under the Sign up to file returns online section, click Sign up for HMRC online services.


  5. If prompted, choose Agent from the New User screen.

  6. Tick the option for Corporation Tax (CT) for Agents  and /or Self Assessment (SA) for Agents and click Next.


  7. Your choices will be displayed for confirmation, click next.

  8. The Registration and Enrolment screen displays information about the steps for Registration; click Next.

    Step 1 - Terms & Conditions, select the box to confirm that you have read the terms and conditions and click Next.
    Step 2 - About you, enter your name and organisation name. It is also useful to enter the email address. The Office type and Number of clients may be ignored. Click Next.
    Step 3 - Create password, make up and enter a password (twice) on the Create Password screen, click Next
    Step 4 - Note User ID your Online Government Account has been created. Make a note of the details and click Next.
    Step 5 - Enter details, for Corporation Tax and Self Assessment in turn enter both your Self Assessment Agent Reference and postcode. The reference is issued by your tax office and will usually be printed on any communication relating to your client, for example statements. The typical format is A9999A or 99999A. If you cannot locate the reference, call the tax office and ask them for your CESA (pronounced Seezer) Agent Code.


  9.  Accept the Terms and Conditions.

  10. If the process is successful, a User ID will be displayed – make a note of it as it is needed to log into the web site. The Revenue will also send a letter confirming the User ID. (If the process is unsuccessful, an error message will be displayed. Click Next to go back to Step 6.)

  1. Log into System Maintenance and select Practice Options from the Practice menu bar list.

    The Practice Options screen displays.

  2. Click Tax Options.

    The following screen displays.

  3. Enter the following information

  4. This completes the first part of the registration process. It is now possible to generate electronic returns in the IRIS tax products but they cannot be sent to the Revenue until the service has been Activated. The Revenue will send an Activation PIN by post within seven days of registering.

Activation

  1. As soon as the Activation PIN letter arrives (not to be confused with the separate User ID letter), log in to the system by following Steps 1  above. Then select Log in from the Do it online section.

  2. Select Self Assessment.

  3. Enter your User ID and password on the Welcome to our Online Service screen.


  4. Enter the Activation PIN and click Activate.

Transmitting Returns

  1. Select the option to Transmit Internet Return from the Reports pull-down menu in IRIS Personal Tax or IRIS Business Tax.


  2. Highlight the client, click Transmit and wait for the response.
